Broke out the Wacom tablet and worked up a quick sketch with it. A little rusty but I would really like to get my skills down with the tablet to produce some other amazing digital painting concepts. I would also like to use it for some quick concept art creation.
Last night I was having some fun with my iPad and making some doodles and sketches. We have a smokin’ monster and a sophisticated pig. The sophisticated pig is the first concept for a logo I was commissioned to work on so don’t be surprised if you see more pig doodles and sketches in the coming weeks.
Imagine a wee little printer that sits on your desk that brings in snippets of news and fun things everyday! Or a to-do list that prints itself out so that you can just stick it in your journal. Or if you are a crossword fanatic a new crossword that prints out daily!
Meet Little Printer – its like having your own printing press within arms reach. The idea is awesome, I am a traditional print guy at heart and love having something tangible, having Little Printer is like having a mini mailman that delivers some printing goodness right to you and caters to your tastes.
Hello again – I hope everyone is doing well. I know I have been lacking in updates lately but it is for a good reason. I swear! Instead of having a lot of doodles and scribbles – which I know people love – I am trying to expand my illustration portfolio with some digital artwork. I am currently working on another digital painting piece but this time I am going to work a little more with textures and brushes.
I received some good advice from some people on Forrst, an online community of designers and developers to share ideas and help each other and ask for advice, I recently posted my previous digital painting of January Jones after I touched it up to get some feedback. I am taking the advice and expanding my techniques.
I am working on my next piece called “Sleeping Beauty”. Here are the first few steps as I just started this today. Enjoy and comments are welcome!
Always start with a sketch to get down the composition of the piece – I am working on a 5×7 canvas for this piece (reason to my madness-will explain later):
Once I get the sketch or rough down, I proceed to do a rough grayscale of shadow and tone. On this next step I went a little ahead of myself and started to add color. I am sure I will end up going backwards later to fix the tone of the hair
Now that I blocked out some shadow and tone I go ahead and block out the colors for the skin tone.
This is what I have done so far. I will have more as I progress through this piece. I am excited to see where it takes me, I am kind of going with the flow on this – I do have some thoughts on textures but I want to see where the brush takes me.
Talk to everyone soon!
Ok, some of you have been listening to me the past few days going on and on about getting Cintiq 12WX tablet – to start really working on getting back into my digital arts. The problem I had with it was price and portability, yeah its nice and it has some sweet features but what if I wanted to head to the park and doodle and draw. I would have to lug all this stuff with me, cables, computers and no place to plug the stuff into.
So I thought to myself why not the iPad for doodling and sketching. No thats dumb, no stylus. Well….I was reading a blog the other night and someone showed a drawing taht he did using a stylus. WHAT?! I thought iPad didn’t support a stylus, well they do. Not a fancy one like you would get with a Cintiq tablet but an alright one.
So I decided to visit the Apple store to try and sell myself on an iPad. I played with it, held it and was impressed. But I couldn’t try a stylus, until the manager actually had one in stock for me to try out – well that was great but I couldn’t try it on the Sketchbook Pro App since none of the models had it on them. Well I ended up buying the stylus (only $15.00) figured I would try it on my brothers iPad and see how I liked it. If I didn’t like it I could just give him the stylus.
I feel in love. The above quick doodle was done using the iPad. Yeah, nothing amazing as I was getting used to working with a stylus on the iPad and learning this program. Well I put myself on the waiting list for the next shipments of iPads. When I get mine I will test out even more functions and do some more doodles on the iPad to share.
Enjoy and more to come!
